Gardening can be a fun way for you to spend time with your kids and grandkids together outdoors regardless of age. Here are a few ideas to ponder:

  • Talk about the purpose(s) of your garden – attract butterflies or birds, grow and harvest fruit, vegetables & herbs, cut flowers for your table or to give to someone you love, create a theme garden, and more.
  • Look at websites or catalogs to pick out seeds or plants
  • Layout a plan of where you will plant each plant
  • Take a field trip to a local nursery to buy your plants and supplies
  • Weed, dig, loosen the soil and add compost
  • Go on a worm and insect hunt
  • Get your hands dirty (and probably your clothes too)
  • Plant the seeds and seedlings
  • Water plants (disclosure: you and your kids will also get wet!)
  • Take selfies to post on our Instagram (#sfladadsingardens)

Doing projects with kids is much more about the time spent together than the actual product. So it’s more important to have fun than to have a perfect garden. And gardens are always works in progress, which makes checking on them and taking care of them a fun and interactive way to spend quality time together.
