Arctostaphylos – California Manzanita

California alone has more than 40 different native species of Arctostaphylos… with dozens more cultivars, subspecies and hybrids. At least 70 different types are commonly sold in nurseries. Manzanita range from low, 2″ tall groundcovers to 20′ tall specimen trees.

Popular for their deep mahogany bark, neat and tidy evergreen nature, and urn-shaped pink to white flowers, they are extremely low maintenance and drought tolerant. Arctostaphylos are highly mycorrhizal (dependent on symbiotic fungi in the soil), which allows them to survive in many environments, as long as they are not being over-watered or fertilized.
